We install and activate it, then check signal quality across the package instead of on one channel. Where the margin is thin we would far rather deal with the dish while we are already there, because a weak signal on this coast turns into a fault the first week it rains in earnest.
DStv Extra View puts a second decoder onto your existing subscription, which is useful in a house with a guest cottage or a self-catering unit attached.
The decoders are joined by a heartbeat cable, and if that run goes outdoors it wants outdoor-rated cable and a sealed entry rather than whatever happens to be left on the reel. We lay it, pair the units and complete the activation.
Two things shorten the life of a dish installation in George: water and salt. The rain is heavy and frequent, and nearer the coast at Herolds Bay there is salt in the air that goes after the F-connectors and the LNB housing.
So sealing is not a finishing detail on this coast, it is the job. Every connector is weatherproofed, the cable is dressed to shed water away from the termination, and the dish goes onto a bracket that will hold against the wind off the sea. A realignment starts at R450 and a new dish from R800.

Wall type decides this job. Solid brick is straightforward; drywall, cladding and built-in units need the fixing to reach something that will genuinely carry the weight, and we pick the height around how the room is arranged before anything is drilled.
On a wall that faces the weather we look harder at the fixing points first. Damp in a wall weakens an anchor, and a heavy TV on the wrong anchor in a wet wall is only a matter of time.
Dead power supplies, HDMI outputs with no picture, boot loops and smartcards that will not read: those are the Explora and HD decoder faults we work on here, and we both repair and replace.
A good number of the boxes we are called out to are perfectly healthy. The fault is a corroded connector or a failing LNB outside, common enough along this stretch of coast, so the signal gets tested before anything is opened up. Six months of cover comes with the repair, and the R550 call-out is for the visit and working out what has failed.
